Kathy's 30 Day Coloring Challenge

Welcome to The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge Blog Hop. Kathy Racoosin from The Daily Marker loves to colour and she is hosting her fifth 30 DAY COLORING CHALLENGE. The premise of the challenge is to colour something everyday even if it’s for just five minutes. It doesn’t matter what you colour or what medium you use. It's such a fun challenge and a brilliant way to make sure that you take a relaxing break for yourself during the day.

Even if you can't get to colour every day you can join in at any time while the challenge is on. You will find that Kathy encourages you along the way to stretch your creativity a little bit more and to feel successful with your colouring. You will learn so much from Kathy and pick up lots of tips and techniques. More details on the challenge can be found in Kathy's blog post here and in Kathy's video here.

I first got to know Kathy through the Hero Arts group on Flickr and from the start she has amazed me with her sheer creativity and fabulous colouring skills. Today Kathy has assembled a blog hop to give your creativity a jump start. Along the hop you'll meet Hero Arts artists, friends and Hostesses.

You should have arrived here from the blog of my very talented friend Linda - can't wait to see what she has coloured and created! A full list of all the blogs on the hop can be found here on Kathy's blog. At the end of the hop you will find a fantastic GIVEAWAY from my favourite company Hero Arts - two shopping sprees of $25.00 each! Winners will be randomly picked from the blog comments of the blog hop - good luck! I have comment moderator switched on so please don't worry if your comment doesn't appear immediately.

Often when I stamp an image for a card I stamp off a few extras for the future in case I need to make a card in a hurry. I have a drawer full of these stamped images ready to go. For when I'm out and about I also keep some stamped images in one container and in another container I have images that I've fully cut out and are ready to colour along with others that have just been coloured. It makes it easy to grab some things when I have the opportunity to cut out or colour. Often when I'm sitting in my car waiting for my kids to come out of school I'll be cutting out and/or colouring. It's amazing how much you can get done when you're just waiting around!

From the time I got Hero Arts Spice Market Large Petal Background I've had great fun colouring it and have used it again and again on cards. Below is a card I posted a while ago which shows what the full image looks like on a kraft base and coloured with pencils.

Stamps - Spice Market Large Petal Background & Type (Hero Arts)

This time I wanted a brighter look so stamped part of the image on a scrap of white card and coloured with Promarkers. After cutting out the piece I adhered it to the top of the card. The sentiment was die cut three times and layered.

Stamp - Spice Market Large Petal Background (Hero Arts)
Dies - Thanks Stamp & Cut (Hero Arts)

Well after making that card it seems like I was bitten by the colouring bug and went on to stamp the image again using up more card scraps.

I went with cool blues and greens for the first card

Stamps - Spice Market Large Petal Background & It's Your Day (Hero Arts)
Die - Pierced Rectange Frames (My Favorite Things)

and then used a mix of warm colours for the second.

Stamps - Spice Market Large Petal Background & It's Your Day (Hero Arts)
Die - Pierced Rectange Frames (My Favorite Things)

I have to say I really enjoyed taking some time to lose myself completely in colouring and would encourage you to do the same and join in on Kathy's The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge if you haven't already done so.

Now it's time to pop over to the next stop on the hop where you'll be visiting the very creative Cheiron. Enjoy the rest of the hop and I'm looking forward to going hopping too!

Your coloring is amazing as are your cards. I have images stamped off and colored or ready to color as well. A great way to pass a little time as you wait. When I go to visit my parents, I take my coloring as my 87 y/o mother and I BOTH color while we visit. LOL

This has been a favorite stamp of mine but I have been afraid to use it because I was limited in how I would use it. Not anymore. I especially love the card where you cut out a portion and added it just to the top of a card. Plus, it looks like it is "coloring book" fun to color!

Unknown said...

They are gorgeous. Wish I had a real one on my floor!

Thank you for sharing this stamp, I have been looking for something like this for sometime. I had one similar to this but thanks to mother nature it hopefully landed in a crafter's yard after the tornado took everything away. Kathy heard about this and was such a dear and sent me a box of items to get me started and to have a get away while the contractor's cleared and rebuilt everything. I will always be grateful to her. It's so wonderful to see all of the wonderful cards that ya'll put together.

WOW! Your cards are so beautiful. I wish I had the patience to color in those stamps. I love how the black frames sets off all the colors.

Karen @ Misplaced Mojo said...

I often think to stamp off extras, though I never think to stamp on kraft! Great idea, especially for a pattern stamp like this!!! Love it! I struggle in that I color with many mediums... and I prefer to color with Zigs on Bristol, watercolor on wc paper, and then you need ink and paper friendly to alcohol markers if you plan on using them. Makes it hard to stamp off extras unless you know how you're going to want to color them later, and I don't always want to stamp them off in 2 different inks on 3 different papers. I'm guessing you always use Neenah or similar anticipating using your Promarkers? You could still use that paper for pencils too, just not the other media.

Your cards involved a lot of detailed coloring and that pairing of colors isn't as easy as most people think. However you did a beautiful job! I love the bright colored cards, they remind me handmade tapestries. I love stamping the same image several times and coloring, cutting them out and then layering. Some find it tedious but I usually find it worth the extra effort. Your cards show that extra effort as they are truly beautiful!!

Coloring is fun, but cutting the images out can also be soothing sometimes. I don't know if I would quite call it a stress reliever haha, but for times like you described (in the car waiting for the kids), it is definitely better than the alternative of just being bored! (I imagine you are rocking out to something good on the radio as you cut of course). Thanks for the chance to win!

I'm on a self-imposed buying hiatus, but I can feel a relapse coming on. What a gorgeously detailed versatile stamp. You showed it off to its full potential. Just gorgeous "WOW" cards Heather. I love that stamp. Great idea with coloring your images ahead of time to have on hand. I am gonna do that!

Unknown said...

Oh my gosh! You just totally did 2 things that I've done and one that I just did! Wow, great minds think alike, right? LOL
I'm trying to get my printer to work correctly. I'm not sure if it's my printer or Adobe Acrobat but when I printed out 3 images for size purposes, they all came out the same size! That's impossible of course and I have to find out what the problem is. In the meantime, I have 3 images on card stock that are the same. I've colored 2 of them and the colors I used make them both different even though they are the same image, like you did with your pretty cards, one being shades of orange and red and my favorite color yellow and one is shades of green and blue. They both look like a page from one of my coloring books. They are amazing!
The other thing you did is something I never thought of for me but you seem to do it all the time. My niece loves to do arts and crafts and she loves to stamp. She is a ballerina with the Orlando Ballet so she doesn't get to stamp much and Auntie Gail has all the stamps. For Christmas last year I got out all my great Christmas stamps and stamped pages of card stock so she could make out her Christmas cards for this year. She was so excited! I also got 2 coupons from Crayola for money off of anything Crayola so I bought her a box of 64 colored pencils. Now she can do what we do but she doesn't have to have all those stamps. Her last apartment was so small she only had one closet! Where would she put a lot of stamps?
Thank you for showing us your beautiful cards and for showing me that great minds think alike! I'm going to stamp some images and cut them out for when I need a quick card too!
